New ‘Thunderbolts’ Teaser Shows Best Look at Sentry’s Powers

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Marvel has been pretty careful not to show us too much of the Sentry (Lewis Pullman). Every other “Thunderbolts*” teaser and trailer shrouds Sentry in shadow when he uses his powers or hides him off camera, which is why the latest teaser for the film is a refreshing change. You can watch the clip below.

The “Thunderbolts*” teaser opens with Bob, aka the Sentry, facing some heavily armed soldiers who – judging by Bob’s shredded pajamas – seem to have already unsuccessfully tried to shoot him down before the action starts. We get to see Bob blast off while the soldiers fire again, and the bullets simply bounce off.

It’s brief, but it’s indicative of why the team is going to have such a hard time bringing down The Sentry/The Void. Without even getting into his other more interesting powers, in this teaser we see Bob fly and we learn he’s bulletproof: powers that no other member of the Thunderbolts has.

The Sentry first appeared back in the 2000s in “The Sentry” #1. Created by Paul Jenkins, Rick Veitch, and Jae Lee, Bob Reynolds was an aging, out-of-shape man who remembers that he used to be the world’s greatest superhero. The miniseries explores Sentry’s history throughout the Marvel Universe and the reasons why both Sentry and the rest of the world have forgotten about him. We eventually learn that the world was made to forget about the Sentry because of his alternate personality, The Void, a powerful and malevolent villain capable of untold destruction.

The Sentry has popped up every now and then in Marvel Comics, including as a member of the Avengers.

If critics are to be believed, The Sentry is going to be a part of the best Marvel movie in years. Reviewers are raving about the Marvel blockbuster “Thunderbolts*” even while speculators are saying the film will have a $70 million opening weekend, on the low end for a Marvel film. Hopefully, word of mouth will help the film get the attention it deserves.

“Thunderbolts*” hits theaters May 2, 2025. The film is directed by Jake Schreier and stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Edward Price, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
